About Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area

Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area is a 300-acre natural park located on the west side of Tulsa, Oklahoma, along the Arkansas River. It features a combination of sandstone bluffs, mixed deciduous forest, and riparian habitats, creating an ecologically diverse environment close to an urban setting. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, and later impacted by quarrying and military training during World War II, the area was preserved through community efforts beginning in the mid-1990s. Today, the terrain offers rugged hills, rock outcrops, and scenic overlooks that provide views of the Arkansas River and the Tulsa skyline. The extensive trail system includes more than 15 miles of multi-use paths that accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and trail running, with skill levels suitable for beginners to advanced riders and hikers. Turkey Mountain is a favored outdoor destination for locals and visitors who seek an accessible wilderness experience without leaving the city limits. Notable landmarks include the rugged ridge lines, several rock climbing spots, and historically significant old quarry sites. The area's natural features support wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various songbirds, adding to its outdoor appeal. Turkey Mountain’s proximity to Tulsa and its blend of challenge and accessibility make it a unique urban wilderness resource in Oklahoma.
